Before the formation of Toto the group, its members performed session work for Steely Dan, [3] Seals and Crofts,[4and Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's leader.
About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

After that, the group broke up again. Toto came back together for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's founding members performed together. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
